18% on soda?
I just watched this stiff douche lend his support for the proposed 18% tax on sugary drinks as a means to help curb the obesity epidemic. Watch as he tries to be as entertaining as Sham Wow guy. My favorite line is, “Of course, we if we keep drinking the same amount of soda we’ll just pay the government 18% more and we won’t improve our health. But I think New Yorkers are smarter than that.”
No, you idiot. New Yorkers aren’t smarter than that. That’s why the tax was proposed in the first place. Do you really think a state that is in dire need of money would want you to stop an activity that they get 18 cents for every dollar you spend on it?
Stop trying to trick yourself into thinking that this is a good thing. If the government really is so concerned about our health, how about rewarding healthful behaviors? Give someone a free subway card for being an active gym member. Double the child tax credit for children of a healthy weight.
Taxes are a means to generate revenue. They’re using the health angle to make you think you’re being screwed for your own good.
